Mr. Stephen P. Winters
Director of Bands
Fine Arts Department Chair
Mr. Winters has been a part of the band department in Poplar Bluff since 2002. Before coming
to Poplar Bluff, he taught at Parkview High School in Springfield, Shelby County Public
Schools in Shelbina, and Weaubleau.
Mr. Winters attended Evangel University from 1990-94 where he completed a degree in music
education. While at Evangel, he was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda music honors society,
was on the Dean’s List four years in a row, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Ensembles he
performed in while at Evangel are the University Band, Concert Band, University Orchestra,
Pep Band, Brass Ensemble, and University Chorus.
Mr. Winters received his Masters of Music in Conducting from Missouri State University in
2000. While at Missouri State, Mr. Winters studied conducting with Dr. Belva Prather and Dr.
Robert Quebbeman. As part of his graduate assistantship, he helped teach the Wind
Symphony, Concert Band, Pride Marching Band, and Studio Jazz Band. He performed in the
Pride Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, and Jazz Band.
Mr. Winters is married to Debbie (Thornburgh) Winters and they have a three year old daughter,
Hannah and a new baby girl, Bethany Faith Winters. She arrived on May 21, 2008 and weighed
8 pounds 1.9 ounces. She was 21 inches long and is now doing great. When he is not at work,
he likes to spend time with his family and in the kitchen cooking (he likes to cook and eat exotic
foods from China, Thailand, India, and Mexico).
